Milwaukee Public Market teams up with Public Library to promote health

The Milwaukee Public Market recently contributed $5,000 in grant money to the Milwaukee Public Library in support of books and programming aimed to promote healthy eating and living, with an emphasis on cooking with children.
“Part of our mission and purpose is to develop partnerships with local civic organizations to create resources that have a culinary educational benefit,” said market spokesperson, Paul Schwartz. “Partnering with the Milwaukee Public Library is a natural fit. Our experience with public cooking classes and housing fresh, artisan food vendors allows us to be more than a financial partner throughout this process.”
The library will use $2500 of the grant for programming which encourages fitness and healthy lifestyles. The remaining $2500 will be used for books used to support these programs.
The public market grant will help support additional copies of books that promote healthy eating, new food guidelines, and healthy lifestyles for all ages. New programs are planned for January 2012 and would run through April.  They will include cooking with children, shopping for and cooking with seasonal foods, eating organically, cooking around the world, and preparing meals for those with food allergies.
"We are grateful to the Milwaukee Public Market for this generous gift and excited about the opportunity to work in partnership with them in sharing information about healthy eating and lifestyles with Milwaukee’s families ," said public library director, Paula Kiely.
