Milwaukee Ballet selects winning choreographer for contest

Mauro de Candia, Italian choreographer living in Berlin, was recently chosen as the winner of the Milwaukee Ballet’s ‘reality’ competition Genesis: International Choreographic Competition.

Mauro de Candia, Italian choreographer living in Berlin, was recently chosen as the winner of the Milwaukee Ballet’s ‘reality’ competition Genesis: International Choreographic Competition.

De Candia was chosen to compete in the competition, along with two other finalists, by artistic director Michael Pink. His abstract and humorous ballet, Something I had in Mind was chosen by the audience as their favorite in addition to being selected by the panel of judges included Septime Webre, artistic director of The Washington Ballet in Washington, D.C.; Ashley C. Wheater, artistic director of The Joffrey Ballet in Chicago; and William Whitener, artistic director of Kansas City Ballet.
De Candia was awarded a cash prize of $3,000 and also has the opportunity to return next season and create a full-length piece for Milwaukee Ballet.
Australian native Lucas Jervies took home second place for Smile, and Mexico native Edgar Zendejas received the third place prize for his piece, Mara.
