Oak Creek-based Master Lock Company, LLC will launch a free interactive game for Facebook fans on Sunday, June 5 in honor of National Cancer Survivors Day. The game, challenges players to help ‘unlock a cure’ by participating. Funds for The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, will be generated based on fan participation.
"Breast cancer can and does strike anyone — young, old, male, female — and we are committed to playing our part in finding a cure," said Rebecca Smith, vice president, marketing, for Master Lock. "This year, we’re challenging our Facebook fans to play their part, literally, in raising awareness and funding research so that we can celebrate many more survivors next June."
According to Justin Matuszek, product manager at Master Lock, the company wanted a way to engage Facebook fans, build its online presence and also help raise funds for a cause the company believes in, he said.
“According to some studies there are more than 140 million casual gamers on Facebook,” he said. “We wanted to tap into that power and not only enhance our Facebook fans’ experience, but challenge those gamers to play for a good cause while also giving them a fun way to learn about our pink product line.”
According to Matuszek, the game is a memory game where players are asked to mimic a directional combination on a virtual  Master Lock 1500iD Speed Dial Set-Your-Own Combination Lock. The Speed Dial is the first lock to open on up-down-left-right movements, instead of the traditional rotary dial.
“It’s very similar to the traditional game of Simon, where players need to remember a progressive sequence of actions or instructions,” Matuszek said. “Here we ask them to remember a combination of directional movements.”
A leader board will rank the top overall gamers, and players can also choose to see a leader board of just their Facebook friends who are playing the game to spur friendly competition, he said.
“We’ve adopted a you play we give model,” Matuszek said. “Master Lock will donate one cent for ever subsequent level completed by each player. So if you beat level one we’ll donate one cent, if you beat level two we’ll donate two cents and so on.”
According to Matuszek, the game has infinite levels and Master Lock will donate up to $25,000; but also challenges players to make individual donations as well.
“The cause is important to us,” he said. “If we can challenge our customers to make their own donations on top of what Master Lock is doing, we will be that much closer to unlocking a cure for the disease.”
The game will be on the Master Lock Facebook page starting Sunday, June 5 and will run for the next six weeks. After a brief pause for another campaign the game will ramp back up and run through the end of October, Matuszek said.
