Mykonos Gyros & Cafe in downtown Milwaukee’s Yankee Hill neighborhood is permanently closing after almost 24 years in business.

The restaurant, located at 1014 N. Van Buren St., will close on Dec. 30 as its lease period expires and owner Tina Kambouris prepares to retire.

The closure was recently announced on the restaurant’s Facebook page.

Kambouris has owned her family’s business since she took it over from her brother in 2002. Mykonos first opened in 1995, serving both American- and Greek-style breakfast, lunch and dinner.

“We are grateful and thankful for the numbers of years we’ve been in business and for the love and support from our customers,” she said.

Kambouris said she wants to “leave on a high note,” and hoped to give customers an advance notice of the closure.

Her plans for retirement include spending more time with her two granddaughters, and eventually working part-time or volunteering but, she said, this will “close the chapter” on her restaurant career.
