Jumpstart on the Weekend

*Friday, Aug. 1, and Saturday, Aug. 2, Milwaukee will play host to the Malibu Open, a world-class extreme waterski competition. Athletes from more than 30 countries will compete as they ski over 70 mph and jump distances spanning more than 200 feet. The weekend event will also feature a bouncy house, a rock wall, a beer garden, and autograph and photo opportunities with athletes. The action will take place at Veterans Park Lagoon, located along East Lagoon Drive in Milwaukee, and will begin at 7:30 a.m. on Friday. Parking costs $10 per car. *Friday, Aug. 1, Newaukee will present the fourth annual “Urban Island Beach Party” at Lakeshore State Park along Milwaukee’s lakefront. The event, free and open to the public, will feature a spectrum of entertainment and activities, from live music to pineapple smashing, a rock climbing wall, and hula hooping and limbo contests. The party will also feature a nonprofit village of area organizations presenting their missions, more than 20 area food trucks onsite and a “Find A Flamingo” contest in which attendees who find fake pink flamingos hidden by Newaukee in the city can get a free beer upon returning their flamingo at the party. Proceeds from the “Urban Island Beach Party” will be donated to the Friends of Lakeshore State Park. Festivities will run from 4 to 11 p.m. For complete details, visit www.urbanislandparty.com.

*Friday, Aug. 1, Pizzeria 3301 of Palermo’s will host a wine and gourmet pizza pairing. Pairings are held on select Fridays beginning at 7 p.m. and include a tasting of five Italian wines paired with five wood-fired pizzas prepared by the venue’s head chef, Arturo Napoles Carrera. The pairings cost $30 per person and require advanced registration. Participants must be at least 21 years old. Pizzeria 3301 is located at 3301 W. Canal St. in Milwaukee.
