IQ: Reproductive Specialty Center

Medical science isn’t static. “It’s always improving, and we must be open to developing new techniques and instrumentation.”

Those are the words of Dr. Grace Janek, one of the five physicians responsible for medical innovations at the Reproductive Specialty Center (RSC) in Milwaukee.

“Our unique medical facility combines the skills, expertise and talents of specialists in gynecology and urology to treat our patients,” she says. “We work together to diagnose issues and prescribe cutting-edge treatments.”

The center’s mission is “to be the referral source for all gynecology and urology cases,” and the physicians there – Charles Koh, Doug Dewire, Dobie Giles, and Mark Dow, along with Janek – continually look for new ways to provide the best patient care and innovative procedures that are minimally invasive and allow for faster recovery.

They hold several patents for their recent innovations.

Endometriosis, while a common disease, is not often successfully treated, says Janek. “Most patients with that condition come to the RSC having had an average of 3.2 prior procedures to treat them, but continue to have great amounts of pain.  Through our new laparoscopic treatments, 85 percent of them are pain-free or have controlled pain. These patients say they’ve been given their lives back.”

Another of their innovations is a new microsurgical instrumentation enabling tubal sterilization reverse surgery to be done laparoscopically. Prior to their invention of these tools, full-sized instruments were used with difficulty and hindered the procedures. The smaller instruments are used to achieve more successful results and are now used worldwide for pediatrics, urology and tubal surgery.

Says the Kolb Co.’s Katie Barrette, who nominated them for the RSC for the IQ Award, “They find great pleasure in delivering results for their patients. Helping them alleviate pain, infertility and incontinence and minimizing the amount of procedures required to treat a condition is what energizes them to be creative and innovative.”
