Horizon unveils hospice renovation and expansion

Horizon Home Care & Hospice has opened the doors to its renovated and expanded in-patient hospice unit at Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital Ozaukee campus located in Mequon.

The nonprofit organization, a full-service home care agency and hospice, celebrated the opening of the newly named Lawlis Family Hospice with a public open house on Thursday. A second open house for the public will be held on Friday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The renovation and expansion project was funded by a $1 million gift from the Lawlis Family Fund through the Greater Milwaukee Foundation and added about 400 square feet to the hospice overall. Each of the 14 patient rooms were expanded by about 40 square feet, and the facility now covers 13,400 square feet.

Additions covered by the $1 million gift include a new outdoor patio and a new luxury shower room. Refrigerators have also been installed in each patient room, and the hospice now has WIFI access for patients and their guests.

More natural lighting has also been implemented into the space to make it more inviting for patients and visitors.

CG Schmidt, Inc., based in Milwaukee, completed the renovation and expansion initiative. Construction began in June.

Horizon Home Care & Hospice is currently considering other hospital locations for additional in-patient hospice units.
