Construction workers injured at 833 East site

Two CG Schmidt construction workers are at home recovering from injuries that they suffered this morning at the 833 East project construction site in downtown Milwaukee.

“They’ve been released from the hospital and went home,” said Rick Schmidt, president of CG Schmidt, which is the general contractor for the project.

The workers were injured while doing a concrete pour, Schmidt said. The firm is investigating how they were hurt, he said.

The Milwaukee Fire Department was called at 6:30 a.m. to the site, where Irgens is developing a 17-story, 358,000-square-foot office building.

The injured workers were working 25 to 30 feet below grade, so the fire department had to use its Heavy Urban Rescue Team to remove the workers and take them to an area hospital.

“(The workers) were alert, conscious and talking to our rescuers,” Milwaukee Fire Department Deputy Chief Brian Smith said.

The Milwaukee Police Department, the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office and OSHA were notified about the accident and will conduct an investigation, Smith said.
