Children’s Hospital opens new tower

Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin in Wauwatosa

recently opened its new 12-story, 425,000-square-foot west tower expansion. The new tower will increase the number of available beds to 294, with room for additional expansion in the future.

Patients have already been moved into rooms on critical care floors, three through five. Additional patients will be moved to acute care floors 9 through 11 later this month.

The shell space in the middle on floors six, seven and eight was created intentionally to allow for expansion up or down, depending on the needs of the hospital, said Donna Jamieson, executive director of patient care at the hospital.

Rooms in the hospital were designed with input from patient families, nurses, physicians and staff. The new private rooms are 30 percent larger than the hospital’s existing rooms and feature many new amenities, including mobile beds, natural lighting, multiple televisions, easy supervision and monitoring capabilities, and a family space. Brightly colored paint and artwork from local school children help enhance the kid-friendly atmosphere.
