Bukacek Construction plots move to Oak Creek’s new downtown

Organizations:

Racine-based Bukacek Construction is working on plans to move its corporate headquarters from Racine to the Drexel Town Square development in Oak Creek, chief executive officer Gregg Thompson said.

Drexel Town Square is the mixed-use development planned for the former Delphi plant site southwest of Howell and Drexel avenues in Oak Creek. The project, planned by a team of developers led by Wispark LLC, is an attempt to create a new designer downtown in Oak Creek. Bukacek Construction is currently located at 2429 Summit Ave. in Racine. The company needs a more convenient location, closer to the freeway and easier to access for employees and customers, Thompson said.

“We need to be more strategically located in the metro Milwaukee area,” he said.

The company has considered several sites, including three in Racine, and has narrowed its focus to the Drexel Town Square project, Thompson said. However, no deal is done yet, he said.

Bukacek currently has 6,000 square feet of office space and about 20,000 square feet of warehouse space. The company is seeking a similar amount of office space for its 12 office employees in the Drexel Town Square project. The office would be located in the mixed-use Main Street area of the development, Thompson said.

The company’s warehouse will likely remain in Racine for the time being, he said. The company would like to build a new multi-tenant warehouse in Oak Creek for its warehouse use if it could find another tenant to co-locate there, Thompson said.

Bukacek owns its Racine building, which is now available for lease and is listed by NAI MLG Commercial.

The Drexel Town Square site is located about one mile east of I-94, which Thompson said is much more accessible with the new Drexel Avenue interchange from the freeway than its current Racine location which is “15 to 20 minutes from I-94.”

The Oak Creek development also is appealing because employees would be able to walk to restaurants and other amenities, he said.

“We really like the idea of being in a neighborhood community,” Thompson said. Bukacek also is hoping to do some of the construction work for the Drexel Town Square project.

“We do expect we would be doing a number of buildings for at least one of the (Drexel Town Square) developers,” he said. “That’s yet to be worked out.”
