Dr. James Frank and his partner, Dr. William Rice, own and operate a Glendale veterinary hospital. Lakeside Animal Hospital Ltd. is currently celebrating 75 years of business operations. Hiring for a cultural fit has contributed to the company’s longevity, Frank says.

“It is important for each staff member to be aligned with the principles and best practices of our business.

“A major part of employee training is to convey an understanding of – and appreciation for – our distinctive culture, where professionalism and outstanding service are always expected. Employees who share this philosophy often find a long and rewarding career here.

“We are fortunate and grateful to have a team of staff members of which 25 percent have given 25 to 35 years of service and another 25 percent have worked here 15 to 25 years. While we may be proud of the length of service of our staff, it has taken us awhile to understand that not everyone has the makeup to be a member of our team.

“Instead of spending an exhaustive amount of time trying to improve a team member’s effort, attitude, and preconceived work habits, learning to let go and recruiting a new prospect may have fewer long-term expenses, financially and emotionally, than you might expect.

“We find it particularly rewarding to see the growth of our younger employees and recognize that we are, in many cases, a stepping stone for them to go on to bigger and better things. Conversely, someone who doesn’t show evidence of receptivity to coaching and training isn’t a failure on our part – it’s his or her choice.”
