Rehorst Premium Milwaukee Vodka, a small batch hand made product produced by Great Lakes Distillery LLC, Milwaukee, received a silver medal in the 2007 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. The international competition is a blind tasting founded by Anthony Dias Blue, Wine and Spirits Editor of Bon Appétit magazine, a division of Conde Nast Corp., New York.

The Wisconsin Institute of Certified Public Accounts (WICPA), Brookfield, awarded Thomas Kilkenny, partner at Deloitte & Touche LLP in Milwaukee, with the 2007 WICPA Achievement Award; Lucretia Mattson, a retired professor at UW-Eau Claire, with the Distinguished Career Award and Schenck Business Solutions, Appleton, received the Firm Public Service Award. Kilkenny has served as a member and chairperson of Wisconsin’s Accounting Examining Board and helped establish substantial equivalence legislation in Wisconsin. Mattson has taught the tax portions of CPA review courses in Eau Claire, the Twin Cities and Green Bay. She previously worked for Bernicke & Associates Ltd., Eau Claire. Oconomowoc Memorial Hospital
Oconomowoc Memorial Hospital received Primary Stroke Center certification from The Joint Commission, Oakbrook Terrace, Ill. In addition to Waukesha Memorial Hospital, Oconomowoc Hospital is the only certified hospital in Waukesha, Dodge, Jefferson and Walworth counties. To receive Primary Stroke Center certification, a hospital must use nationally recognized guidelines for rapid treatment of stroke designed to improve patient outcomes and prevent future strokes. As a primary stroke center, Oconomowoc Memorial provides: 24 hour diagnostic testing including CT and MRI; the ability to administer clot-busting drugs, the only Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved treatment for ischemic stroke; education programs and screenings for the community and employers to reduce risk for stroke; outpatient stroke and Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA) or mini-stroke clinic providing evaluation and treatment and support services including the Waukesha County Stroke Club.
Natural Resource Technology Inc.
Six senior staff members of Natural Resource Technology Inc., Pewaukee, purchased the company from Robert Karnauskas and Jeffrey Heglund, the co-founders of the firm. Karnauskas will remain with the firm managing technical assignments and pursing personal interests in sustainable development and Heglund will remain with the firm to assist the new management team with financial and business management responsibilities during the transition. As part of the purchase, Laurie Parsons was promoted to president and Clark Crosby was promoted to business manager. Parsons has been with Natural Resource Technology for 13 years and most recently served as vice president and manager of technical operations. Crosby has been with the firm since 1989 and most recently served as manager of information technology.

The Public Relations Society of America Southeastern Wisconsin Chapter, Pewaukee, recognized Carlos Santiago, chancellor of UW-Milwaukee with the Paragon Communicator of the Year Award and Steve Johnstone, executive vice president and director of public relations for Blue Horse Inc., Milwaukee, with the Dorothy Thomas Black Award. Santiago was recognized for effectively articulating his vision to transform UW-Milwaukee into a world-class research center. Associates at Robert W. Baird & Co. Inc., Milwaukee, raised more than $25,000 for the American Cancer Society Inc., during a silent auction and raffle following the firm’s annual meeting. The donation will fund continued research to determine the causes of cancer and move closer toward a cure for cancer.
Northwestern Mutual Foundation
Hope House of Milwaukee Inc., Milwaukee, received a $20,000 grant from the Northwestern Mutual Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Co., Milwaukee. The grant will support the Chrysalis women and family transitional shelter program, which offers single women, women or men with children, or intact families a safe place to stay for up to two years.

The Sunflower Sinner
Woodley Press, Topeka, Kan., published The Sunflower Sinner, An Odyssey of Politics and Passion, a political memoir by Wisconsin author Cynthia Dennis about her father, Paul Lackie, a politician in Kansas who was determined to be the next governor of Kansas. Lackie was involved in a political scandal when his bribery payoff was exposed. Dennis tells the story of her childhood and family life with her parents and two sisters as they dealt with the exposure and aftermath. Trainfest, presented by the Wisconsin Southeast (WISE) Division of the National Model Railroad Association Inc., (NMRA), Milwaukee, and the Model Railroad Industry Division Hobby Manufacturers Association (HMA), Butler, N.J., renewed its three-year contract partnership with Mercury Communication Partners LLC, Elm Grove. Mercury will continue to work with Trainfest to develop its brand identity and message to promote the annual event. Trainfest will be at the Wisconsin State Fair Exposition Center, West Allis, in November.
Milwaukee Area Technical College
Milwaukee Area Technical College, Milwaukee, received two grants totaling more than $200,000 from We Energies, Milwaukee, to strengthen the college’s renewable energy programming. A grant of $110,000 will fund work for 18 faculty members to modify courses and curriculum in the area of renewable energy and its application to the production of electricity. Dave Stinnett, an instructor in electronic technology, will lead the curriculum that will be used to instruct 360 students in the first semester. A second grant of up to $100,000 will help pay for two large rooftop photovoltaic (PV) panel systems, each rated at 17 kilowatts, one at the Mequon campus and one at the Oak Creek campus. The Oak Creek campus will also receive two smaller, additional panels to be placed near the Center for Energy Conservation and Advanced Manufacturing. MATC is applying for another $70,000 in funding from Focus on Energy, Madison, to supplement the PV panel project. The two grants will pay for about two-thirds of the total cost.
