The Better Business Bureau Serving Wisconsin has alerted Wisconsin residents of a new phone scam aimed at taxpayers.

According to the BBB, more than 20,000 taxpayers have received phone calls from scammers acting as Internal Revenue Service agents. The scam is the “largest ever” phone fraud scam of its kind, the BBB said.

Additionally, the BBB is warning consumers about other scams identified on the IRS’ “dirty dozen” list, an annual list it compiles on scams impacting taxpayers throughout the year.

“The BBB is continuing to receive calls from consumers in regard to various scams involving unsolicited calls from individuals who fraudulently claim to represent the IRS,” said Ran Hoth, president and CEO of the Better Business Bureau Serving Wisconsin. “At all times, but particularly during tax filing season, we want to make sure taxpayers are aware of these scams so they do not become victims.”
