Associated Bank to build branch near Park East corridor

Associated Bank plans to build a new 3,011-square-foot bank branch building with a drive-through window at 1301 N. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr., just north of the Park East corridor in downtown Milwaukee.

The site is currently used as a parking lot. It is located northwest of King Drive and West McKinley Avenue, just north of a city-owned green space and just south of the former Mandel Graphic Solutions building at 1319 King Dr.

The project will be reviewed by the city’s Board of Zoning Appeals on Thursday, Dec. 12.
Rinka Chung Architecture is the designer for the project. The bank branch will have 6 to 10 full-time employees, according to information submitted by Associated Bank to BOZA.

“It’s an exciting development for the Park East,” said Rinka Chung principal Matt Rinka.

After several years of little to no development, the former Park East freeway spur corridor is finally showing signs of life. Wauwatosa-based real estate firm Wangard recently began construction for a 104-unit, 4-story apartment building with 7,000 square feet of retail space at the southwest corner of North Jefferson Street and East Lyon Street in the Park East corridor.

Earlier this year Mandel Group completed the second phase of its North End development, adding two buildings with a total of 155 apartments along the Milwaukee River near the Park East corridor. Also this year, the Milwaukee School of Engineering completed construction of a parking structure with an athletic field on top at 1305 N. Broadway in the Park East corridor. Opus Development Corp. and Mercy Housing Lakefront Inc. plan to build three buildings with 190 apartments, 33,000 square feet of retail space and 21,000 square feet of office space on the Park East corridor block bordered by Water Street, Broadway, Ogden Avenue and Milwaukee Street.
