The Jewish Community Center is asking local architectural and engineering firms to get creative with canned foods for a charity competition to gather donations for a local food pantry.

The competition, called, “Canstruction,” is a charity event hosted each year in different cities around the world during which local architects and engineers build giant structures made from canned food donations.

Participating firms in Milwaukee include Plunkett Raysich Architects LLP, Eppstein Uhen Architects, GRAEF, Zimmerman Architectural Studios and Hunzinger Construction Company.  The firms will work on their canned food sculptures with the help of students they mentor over the next month and unveil their designs at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 30 in the rotunda of the Bayshore Town Center.

The sculptures will be on display through Nov. 1 and an awards ceremony and reception will take place that night from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

“We are blessed and grateful to have the design community’s support of this event,” said JCC president and CEO Mark Shapiro. “Working in tandem with our community partners we are able to share this incredibly creative architectural display with the public while they help us fight hunger in Milwaukee.”

It will be the first time since 2014 Milwaukee firms have participated in the international charity event. Here are some photos of the designs from that competition:

Following the awards ceremony on Nov. 1, the sculptures will be dismantled and the canned foods will be donated to the Jewish community Pantry.
