Nominees needed for annual Touching Lives Award
Milwaukee-based Horizon Home Care & Hospice is now accepting nominations for the 2011 Touching Lives Award. The award honors inividuals who have made a lasting impact on improving the lives of others through their actions. Past winners have included former Wisconsin First Lady Sue Ann Thompson, chief executive officer of Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital, Leo Brideau and chief executive officer of Froedtert hospital Bill Petasnick. Physicians, hospice and palliative care nurses have also been honored with the award. This is the first time since its inception in 2007, that Horizon has opened the nominations up to the public. Arts Guild continues to build panel of expertise for forum event
The Southeastern Wisconsin Arts Guild has announced that “Visual Affects,” the event to highlight the film and television industry and its impact on the Milwaukee area will now include Shawn Monaghan of Firestarter Films on its presenting panel of speakers. The event will take place at ComedySportz, 420 S. 1st St., on Monday, Aug. 16 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Monaghan is co-founder of Firestarter Films, which offers local filmmakers the opportunity to present their films and talk with their audience afterward.
"The moving media production community in Milwaukee is healthy and on the verge of thriving, ” said Jonathan Jackson of Milwaukee Film and sponsor of the Visual Affects event, “I am delighted to see ‘Visual Affects’ highlighting this industry and am happy to share the story of the economic impact it makes and even more importantly, how it could grow with targeted support."
Jackson, along with John Kishline, screen and stage actor and Neille Hoffman of Aurum Design Studio in Milwaukee, Dave Fantle, vice president of public relations for VISIT Milwaukee, and Dick Chudnow, actor and co-creator of ComedySportz will also be on the panel.

Help needed for oil spill in Kalamazoo River
U.S. Senator Russ Feingold has reached out to some Wisconsin businesses that offered to help address the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. According to Feingold, those businesses can now help the Enviromental Protection Agency with a spill that recently contaminated Michigan’s Kalamazoo River.
“As the oil poured into the Gulf of Mexico, several Wisconsin businesses contacted me looking for ways to apply their technological expertise to address the spill,” Feingold said in a statement. “I was all too happy to help ensure the ideas they were submitting were being properly tracked and vetted by the federal government, as well as BP. Now, with last week’s spill in the Kalamazoo River, there is a new crisis in our own backyard and the federal government is once again looking to the private sector for assistance. I have seen some of these Wisconsin-generated technologies first hand, and I want to be sure these Wisconsin businesses are aware of this new opportunity to deploy them closer to home.”
The EPA has developed a faster review process to scrutinize innovative ideas and technological solutions to deploy along the Kalamazoo River. Feingold’s staff has already contacted several Wisconsin businesses that had contacted his office seeking assistance in helping with the Gulf to inform them of the EPA’s need in Michigan.
