Barrett touts record on jobs in 1st TV ad

Learn more about:

Democratic gubernatorial hopeful Tom Barrett is playing up his job creation efforts as Milwaukee mayor in his first TV ad of the campaign.
Barrett’s spot says he helped bring government and business leaders together from urban, suburban and rural counties to help create jobs. To show the results, the spot plays a series of TV newscast clips about job announcements, including 800 new jobs at Republic Airways.
The narrator says Barrett is now running for governor and has a plan to create jobs for "all of Wisconsin" that includes help for start-ups, tax credits for companies that create jobs and help for small businesses wanting to expand.
"We all know government doesn’t create jobs, businesses do," Barrett says as he looks into the camera. "But working together, we can help pave the way. I’ve done it before, and now I want to do it for all of Wisconsin."
Barrett’s GOP rivals both questioned his credentials on creating jobs.
Mark Neumann said in a statement that the business climate in Milwaukee is "dismal."
"It is puzzling that career politician Tom Barrett’s first TV ad touts his record as a job creator," Neumann said. "Under his watch, Milwaukee has seen a stunning number of jobs disappear. Tom Barrett is ill-equipped to solve Wisconsin’s jobs crisis."
Republican Scott Walker accused Barrett of running away from his record of raising taxes.
“Tom Barrett has raised taxes in Madison, in Washington and in Milwaukee, and time and again has turned to government, not people, to ‘create’ jobs," Walker said. "Wisconsin families deserve more than just sound bites, false advertising, and broken promises.”
Neumann began running his first TV ad Feb. 21, while Walker began his first spot March 11.
