The suspect accused of attacking Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett in August pleaded guilty Tuesday to first-degree reckless injury, two counts of disorderly conduct and one count of bail jumping.
Anthony J. Peters, 21, was accused of attacking Barrett who was leaving the Wisconsin State Fair on Aug. 15 with his family. Peters was involved in a domestic dispute. When Barrett attempted to call 911, Peters punched him in the face and hit him with a tire iron, police said.
Barrett injured his hand as he attempted to fight back. Barrett was hospitalized with a shattered right hand and three broken teeth. He has since had multiple surgeries on his right hand.
Peters is scheduled to be sentenced for the crime on July 23. Prosecutors are recommending a sentence of nine years in prison and 10 years of extended supervision for Peters.
Barrett issued the following response to the guilty plea by Peters: “I have great respect for the judicial process. I’m not going to make any comments until I have the opportunity to do so during the sentencing hearing.”
