Liberal groups looking to make U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan’s Medicare plan an issue in the state Senate recall elections believe they have the opening they were looking for with Sen. Alberta Darling, R-River Hills.
The We Are Wisconsin PAC has posted video on YouTube of Darling telling a crowd that Dems are trying to tie her to Ryan, thinking that would be a negative thing. She says critics are lying about Ryan’s Medicare plan and that he’s doing the “right thing.”
“I’m standing with Ryan anytime, anywhere,” Darling says in the video. She later adds, “Go Paul Ryan.”
Neil Sroka, spokesman for the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, says new ads from his organization and Democracy For America are “forthcoming.” But he declined to say anything more about the planned spots, releasing a statement from PCCC co-founder Stephanie Taylor that, “This footage will help us show voters that Alberta Darling is part of the same national Republican war on working families that wants to end Medicare and cut programs like BadgerCare.”
Darling campaign manager Andrew Davis called efforts to interject Ryan’s federal Medicare plan into state Senate races a stretch.
"Alberta was expressing the fact that Paul Ryan is doing what leaders are supposed to do – make tough decisions to fix problems,” Davis said. “She was making a point that we should all want leaders in office like Paul Ryan who aren’t afraid to tackle problems head on."
