Aurora names Andy Anderson chief medical officer

Aurora Health Care today named Dr. Andy Anderson its new chief medical officer. He will be responsible for Aurora’s strategic direction and operational deployment of critical physician and clinical support functions, including infection prevention, medical staff services and case management.

Anderson, who joined Aurora in 2011 as the senior vice president of academic affairs, has played instrumental roles in overseeing Aurora’s medical education partnership with the University of Wisconsin, along with leadership roles in shaping the future of primary care across all Aurora Health Care facilities.

“Dr. Anderson’s experience in leading complex partnerships and plotting the future of primary care within the Aurora Health Care system has helped elevate Aurora’s ability to deliver the best in patient care,” said Dr. Nick Turkal, president and chief executive officer of Aurora. “Now, as our chief medical officer, he’ll be able to ensure our clinical operations are as efficient as possible to serve the needs of the community.”

Anderson will also serve as the executive leader for the Aurora Research Institute, champion clinical informatics and continue to lead medical education for the system in partnership with the University of Wisconsin.  Additional responsibilities will include overseeing libraries and staff services, as well as the organization’s Live Well program, focused on healthy, active employees.  He will continue to practice medicine, seeing a limited number of patients.

Prior to joining Aurora, Anderson served in multiple leadership roles during more than 15 years of work at a variety of national health care systems, including Chicago-based NorthShore University HealthSystem, The University of Chicago Hospital, and the Medical College of Wisconsin/Froedtert Health.

Anderson assumes the new role of Aurora’s chief medical officer immediately, reporting to Turkal and chief operating officer Gerard Coleman.
