Meijer plans store in West Bend

Grand Rapid, Mich.-based Meijer is adding West Bend to the growing number of southeastern Wisconsin communities where it plans to build stores.

Meijer plans to build a 192,940-square-foot store at South Main Street and Parkway Drive, according to the City of West Bend.

“I believe this will be a wonderful  compliment to the Paradise and Main retail shopping experience,” said West Bend Mayor Kraig Sadownikow. “Clearly, the West Bend business climate continues to be on a strong upswing, which is both very encouraging and rewarding for the culture shift we have established at City Hall.”

Meijer is building stores that will open this year in Grafton, Oak Creek, Kenosha and Wauwatosa. The company plans to open stores in Waukesha and Sussex in 2016, and recently obtained approval to build a store in Greenfield.

The West Bend store could open in 2017.

Meijer stores offer full grocery and general merchandise departments. The proposed West Bend store would also have a drive thru pharmacy and an outdoor garden center.

Meijer has more than 200 stores in Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio and Kentucky and now is entering the Wisconsin marketplace with several stores.

“We have been courting Meijer since it was first known they wanted to enter Wisconsin,” said West Bend city administrator and Development Department director T.J. Justice. “West Bend is again growing at a very rapid pace in all facets of its economy including retail, service and manufacturing.”
