The Milwaukee Repertory Theater has been selected as one of 832 nonprofit organizations nationwide to receive funding from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) as part of its Art Works grant, according to an announcement made by NEA Chairman Rocco Landesman Wednesday.
The Rep, recommended for a $30,000 grant, will use the funding to produce the Tony Award-winning play Clybourne Park in spring 2013 as well as the play A Raisin In the Sun.
“The two shows, done in tandem, touch on a key element of my artistic vision for The Rep,” said artistic director Mark Clements. “These two plays bring to the fore conversations about racial equality and political correctness.”
The NEA assembled panels of outside experts to narrow down the 832 recipients from 1,509 applications in March. The Art Works grant totals $22.3 million and supports organizations in 13 artistic disciplines.
“I’m proud to announce these 832 grants to the American public including supporting Milwaukee Repertory Theater’s productions of Clybourne Park and A Raisin In the Sun,” Landesman said. “These projects offer extraordinary examples of creativity in our country, including the creation of new work, innovative ways of engaging audiences and exemplary education programs.”
