Milwaukee Mayor TOM BARRETT announced that MATTHEW HOWARD has begun his tenure as director of the city’s Office of Environmental Sustainability. Howard, who was confirmed by the Milwaukee Common Council in June, replaces interim director ERICK SHAMBARGER. Former Director ANN BEIER left for a job in Portland, Ore., last year.

New Jersey Gov. CHRIS CHRISTIE will be in Waukesha County Oct. 4 for a fundraiser for GOP guv candidate SCOTT WALKER.

The Club for Growth awarded Republican U.S. Rep. JIM SENSENBRENNER its “Defender of Economic Freedom” award. Sensenbrenner (R-Menomonee Falls) scored a 95 percent on the group’s voting-record scale. He’s one of 88 members of Congress to receive the award. Sensenbrenner was also presented with a "Public Official Award" by the Association of University Technology Managers this week.

The Roberto Hernández Center at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee presented Voces de la Frontera executive director CHRISTINE NEUMANN-ORTIZ its Hispanic Heritage Month Award during a celebration Friday at the Hefter Conference Center in Milwaukee. The state Department of Justice announced that MARCUS GLASS and KIMBERLY BROWN have been charged with theft by fraud over their participation in the embattled Wisconsin Shares child subsidy program. Glass and Brown operated a day care on West Good Hope Road in Milwaukee; they are alleged to have billed Wisconsin Shares for children who weren’t attending the day care.
