Seth Godin believes that playing it safe is actually unsafe…even in the job world. By putting a spin on the Icarus fable, Godin shows how we can thrive by adopting an “artist” attitude.
The Icarus story is about a bird (Icarus) who was told by his father not to fly too close to the sun, but not too close to the water either, because it’ll destroy the lift in his wings. Godin builds on the idea that although the moral is to play it safe, flying too low is worse than too high because doing so only seems promising.
He explains in this five-part book how innovators seize new grounds, make connections and work without a map. In addition, the book features stories on real “artists” and also a chapter on various propaganda and myths which taught us that conformity is the key and how it’s inhibiting us to be “free.”
