What does your daily or weekly fitness regime consist of?
"It largely depends on the time of year. My work out level varies by the quarter of the year that I’m in. Currently I am in my "recovery quarter" I work out four to eight hours per week. In January I will be in "build up" quarter where I build up my anarobic threshhold. I start running races usually half marathons in early April. I usually do a marathon in May and Triathlon season starts in June. I usually do three to five triathlons – swim, bike, run. Last year I successfully completed Ironman Wisconsin on a windy 95 degree day. During the season I workout between eight to sixteen hours per week."
Other than the obvious health benefits, how has being fit improved your life?
"I started this fitness habit about six years ago after some career turbulence and getting stressed out and over weight. It’s made a real positive difference. One, it’s just really fun. I’m 47 and it’s like I’m in high school again Two, I have gained so many close friends doing these events – something happens to a relationship when you "sweat together" with someone else. I think one get’s more connected to the other person – sort of like sharing a good meal with someone. Three, it really helps to keep work life in perspective. I sleep better and I am always in a better mood after a workout. People can see the glow that this brings."
How does personal fitness affect your work life?
"The time required for personal fitness keeps me focused on time management. Last year to get my workouts in, I was waking at 4:15 AM to get it all in. At times I can feel overloaded."
Do you have a corporate health or wellness initiative?
"No."
How does fitness or wellness affect your overall organization?
"The concept of fitnes is in the DNA of my firm. Business Fitness, Inc. is dedicated to helping our business clients become more "fiscally fit" organizations by reducing fat telecom bills, better agility with business systems and better protected of their systems."
What advice do you have for other executives interested in starting either a personal fitness plan or corporate wellness initiative?
"Just do it. Yeah, that’s over used but don’t worry if you’re not great… One needs about three or four weeks of commitment to stay excercising. After that, it becomes much easier because it becomes a good habit."
