Foodies harness the power of the web

Four years ago, Paul and Lori Fredrich started their food blog as a way to keep track of unique recipes they created in their kitchen.

“It was really sort of a happy accident,” said Lori, assistant director of external relations, communications and recruitment at Marquette University’s College of Education. “We have always liked to cook and have been big proponents of cooking together since we got married. We started developing original recipes and found that we couldn’t remember most of them without writing them down. The web just seemed like a great place to do that.”

The blog, “Burp! Where Food Happens,” started out as a place where the two could document different recipes they had tried and share with family and friends. However, the blog has grown into an award-winning past-time with a significant group of loyal readers.

“I had no idea other people were going to be interested in what we were doing. In six months, we had a group of regular readers that were posting and commenting on our recipes,” Lori said.

According to Paul, sales and marketing director for Milwaukee-based Tanner-Monagle Inc., he and his wife try to focus on foods and ingredients that are local and easily accessible.

“We try to focus on making comfort food with different flavor combinations than you would typically expect,” he said. “We aren’t just going to do plain mac ‘n cheese, we’re going to use some really flavorful cheeses and really make it unique.”

The Fredriches’ passion for food has spurred beyond just the blog. The two have formed a loyal Twitter following as well and even formed a MKEFoodies group that meets on a regular basis.

“It has really become a part of our life,” Paul said. “And it’s more than just a blog, it has developed into a community of friends and relationships with local restaurants, other bloggers and just people who enjoy good food. It’s something we plan to continue doing.”
