In response to a significant increase in patient volumes, Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital has opened its new Cancer Center at Columbia St. Mary’ s Hospital Ozaukee, 13111 N. Port Washington Road, Mequon.

Over the last three years, the number of patient visits for medical oncology has grown 133 percent, from 3,343 patient visits in 2009 to 7,805 patient visits in fiscal 2012.

“With the increasing patient volumes at our Mequon Cancer Center, the space was no longer meeting the needs of our patients,” said Pam Bauman, regional director, Columbia St. Mary’s Oncology Services.

“This new space provides the perfect setting for our team-based approach to cancer care. This multi-disciplinary system brings together our expert team of caregivers to meet with patients and their loved ones at one time, and develop the ideal treatment plan. The new Center provides a technologically-advanced, comforting and healing environment for all patient needs,” said Bauman.

According to Bauman, Columbia St. Mary’s treats more cancer patients than any other cancer center in Ozaukee County.

“Demand continues to increase at our Mequon hospital, and we’ve added new physicians and staff to meet that need. We’re providing the care and the environment that our cancer patients have asked for. They’ve shown they appreciate the extraordinary care we provide,” she said.

Construction began on the project in June. A significant portion of the funds were provided by Columbia St. Mary’s Foundation.

The new 8,200-square-foot Cancer Center is located on the hospital’s second floor in the former intensive care unit.

“Our approach to cancer care is simple: from the moment a patient is diagnosed with cancer, we guide and support them on their journey to become a survivor,” said Lisa Froemming, president and chief executive officer of Columbia St. Mary’s Foundation. “Our donors are extremely proud to support that comprehensive, compassionate, high standard of care that sets us apart in this community.”
