There are some significant changes to key variables in this month's forecast compared with the November 2010 forecast.

Local stocks begin year on a high note

The BizTimes Stock Index, which tracks the cumulative value of publicly held companies based in southeastern Wisconsin, rose an astounding 31.4 percent in 2010 and shows no signs of slowing down in 2011.


The local index began 2010 at 123.64 and ended the year at 162.50, flirting with a two-year high.

MMAC employers are optimistic about 2011


Solid optimism was expressed by Milwaukee-area businesses both for 2011 as a whole and for the year's first quarter, according to the latest Business Outlook Survey conducted by the Metropolitan Milwaukee Association of Commerce (MMAC).

‘2011 has the potential to be outstanding’

Compared with the stark predictions for 2009 and 2010, 2011 is expected to be a year of moderate growth and improvement as we enter the third year of what by many is predicted to be a 10-year cycle of "the new normal" in economic growth.

Small business executives bullish on 2011
