Food safety ‘from A to Z’
Between recalls and the natural foods movement, as well as other trends, the food and beverage industry is seeing many new concerning issues today.
As a result, law firm Michael Best & Friedrich LLP's Milwaukee office recently presented an event on “What Every Food and Beverage Company Must Know About Issues in Food Safety – From 'A' to 'Z.'”
“The integrity of our food and beverage supply is top of mind with most of the consuming public,” said attorney Paul Benson, who led the presentation. “There was a time when I could very easily go to a conference or speak to a group and say with 100 percent certainty, and not be challenged, that the U.S. food supply is the safest and best in the world. If I made that claim today, I would likely be challenged.”

New institute positions family businesses for success
As family-owned and -operated businesses across southeastern Wisconsin chart everything from finances to succession plans, a new institute has launched to cushion them with support and resources for their success.
The Family Business Legacy Institute introduced itself to the region in January as a hub to serve the area’s niche market of family businesses.
The FBLI operates on a fee-based model for families. The institute has a mission of “faithfully supporting family businesses for the future” and caters its services to the legal, financial and psychological needs of members.

TIF district closures boost City of Milwaukee tax base
The City of Milwaukee dissolved one tax incremental finance district in 2014, which provided a $54 million boost to the city’s tax base.
The city plans to dissolve two more TIF districts this year, which will provide a combined $34.8 million increase to the city’s tax base.
Of the city’s 47 TIF districts, all but 11 of them have generated increased property values, and that includes four new TIF districts that really have not had a chance to grow yet.
Those are some of the numerous observations that can be gleaned from the city’s annual TIF report, completed recently by the Department of City Development. The report is important because TIF is the most common economic development tool used by the city, and demonstrates the level of success those efforts have had.
