Hiring and firing: HR lessons from TEC members

If you fire an employee, should you “walk them out of the building” immediately? A TEC member said he did just that, and it sparked discussion among his fellow CEOs.

The workforce watches with interest how you fire someone and will be left wondering, “Is this how my firing will be handled?”

Battle to build The Couture could be nearing end

Nearly three years after plans for The Couture development were first announced, the project recently won a major legal victory that brings it closer to finally breaking ground.

Opponents of the project could try to continue to stall it with a lengthy legal appeals process. But supporters are hoping any appeal is handled as quickly as possible, perhaps by having it advanced straight to the state Supreme Court.

Medical College and App Brewery collaborate on health care apps

The ability to track concussion symptoms, to get vital information on dosage needs in emergencies, and to receive transgender health consultations through the use of mobile apps will soon be a reality.

Those three app ideas, conceptualized by Medical College of Wisconsin teams, were the winners of the second annual Mobile App Challenge recently hosted by MCW.

Reed Street Yards

Rexnord Corp. announced recently that it will move its Zurn business from Pennsylvania to a new 52,000-square-foot, three-story office building that will be built in the Reed Street Yards Global Water Technology Park in Milwaukee. The site for the building is on the south side of Freshwater Way, just north of the Iron Horse Hotel and just east of the Sixth Street viaduct. Zurn Industries LLC, a manufacturer of engineered water solutions, is the first company that plans to move to the Global Water Technology Park, which is adjacent to the Global Water Center. The building will be developed by Milwaukee-based Klein Development Inc.

Working beyond normal retirement age has its advantages

Many Americans are staying in the workforce past their normal retirement age. According to the U.S. Social Security Administration, more than 30 percent of individuals between the ages of 70 and 74 reported income from earnings in 2010 (the latest year data is available). Among those ages 65 to 69, nearly 49 percent reported employment income.

PAVE Milwaukee moves office to Matthews Building

PAVE Milwaukee, an education-focused nonprofit, gained 1,000 square feet as it relocated its offices to the Matthews Building on Wisconsin Avenue in June.

The organization, which works to build strong boards for area partner schools, moved from a 3,000-square-foot space in the Germania Building at 135 W. Wells St. in downtown Milwaukee to a 4,000-square-foot space in the Matthews Building, located at 301 W. Wisconsin Ave., also in downtown Milwaukee.

The move was prompted by Vangard Group LLC's plans to convert the Germania Building into 70 “affordable” apartments.

PAVE has leased office space in the Germania Building for eight years, according to Michelle Burmeister, communications director at PAVE. The organization agreed to vacate the building by mid-summer.

Its new space was formerly occupied by the Greater Milwaukee Committee, according to Burmeister.

The extra square footage will equip PAVE with more space and flexibility to accommodate the organization's interns and student staff members while also giving it the room to grow, Burmeister said.

The new site's central downtown location is also advantageous as it gives PAVE's program staffers “quick and easy access to every corner of the city,” Burmeister said.

PAVE currently collaborates with more than 50 Milwaukee schools and operates with six full-time and two part-time staff members.
