Milwaukee-based Mandel Group Inc. will hold a groundbreaking ceremony at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 14, to celebrate the start of construction of Lighthorse 4041, a mixed-use development that will be built at 4041 Oakland Ave. in Shorewood. The building will have 84 apartments, 200 public parking spaces and a Walgreens store.

A topping off ceremony was held last week for The Moderne, a 30-story residential building under construction in downtown Milwaukee. A topping off ceremony signifies that the highest point of the structure has been achieved.

The Park East corridor, which remains mostly vacant approximately seven years after the Park East freeway spur was torn down, could now become a painful and constant reminder to the city about a huge missed opportunity to create a more vibrant downtown.

Major demolition work began recently for the $54 million downtown Milwaukee Marriott hotel project. The 200-room, nine-story hotel will be built around the Johnson Bank building, located southwest of Wisconsin Avenue and Milwaukee Street.

Brookfield-based Briohn Building Corp. has been contracted to perform the design/build construction of an 18,000-square-foot addition for Fabricated Metal Products Inc. at 3240 East Van Norman Ave., Cudahy. Briohn has also completed the design and construction of two clean rooms for Medovations, Inc., a medical device manufacturing company located at 102 E. Keefe Ave in Milwaukee, and construction of a 1,400-square-foot specialty cupcake store, Gigi's Cupcakes, at One Mayfair Place in Wauwatosa.
