Wheaton Franciscan Health Care

The Wisconsin Heart Hospital recently received the latest in chest pain center accreditation from the Society of Chest Pain Centers (SCPC), an international organization dedicated to eliminating heart disease as the number one cause of death worldwide. The Heart Hospital is the first facility in southeastern Wisconsin to receive the accreditation.

According to Mary Paredero, director of emergency services at the Wisconsin Heart Hospital, the hospital’s door-to-balloon time, or the amount of time that elapses from the moment a patient comes through the door to the time the patient is undergoing a heart catheterization to open the heart vessels, is currently at 50 minutes which is 40 minutes faster than the 90 minute national target. She credits that success, in part, to a close partnership the hospital has with local EMS agencies. Collaboration with local EMS agencies and community education are among the advanced criteria the SCPC looks at when awarding accreditation. Hospitals that have received SCPC accreditation have achieved a higher level of expertise in dealing with patients who arrive with symptoms of a heart attack. They emphasize the importance of standardized diagnostic and treatment programs that provide more efficient and effective evaluation as well as more appropriate and rapid treatment of patients with chest pain and other heart attack symptoms. They also serve as a point of entry into the health care system to evaluate and treat other medical problems, and they help to promote a healthier lifestyle in an attempt to reduce the risk factors for heart attack.
