Last December, Yunker Industries Inc. was in trouble. The Lake Geneva-based designer and printer of interior retail signs, point-of-purchase displays and related items, had seen orders for its products dry up through the second half of 2008.

Yunker Industries was founded in Chicago in 1948 by Warren and Mary Helen Yunker, while the young couple lived above a grocery store owned by Warren Yunker's uncle. Warren worked at the store during the day and hand-painted signs for grocery stores at night. Mary Helen delivered the signs, often with a baby in tow, during the day.

Building credibility

The Yunker Industries Inc.'s transformation played a vital role in helping it win a new line of credit with Park Bank, said Heather Baylar, vice president of commercial lending at the bank. "This is a great, family-owned company that now has great visibility," she said. "They did all of the right things necessary to put them on a forward path.
