Wisconsin also had a strong pipeline of venture capital investments in 2015, but far fewer deals were completed in the first quarter of 2016, according to a Wisconsin Economic Development Corp. report released earlier this month.

Illinois took the top spot, with $94.6 billion invested in 193 companies. In second place was California, followed by Texas.

Nationally, $625 billion was invested in more than 3,700 companies in 2015. Of the national deals, 32 percent were in the consumer sector, 27 percent were in business services, 15 percent were in financial services, 11 percent were in information technology, 8 percent were in energy, 5 percent were in health care and 2 percent were in materials and resources.

“It’s remarkable that private equity invests in every state and nearly every congressional district in our country,” said Mike Sommers, AIC president and chief executive officer. “This investment has helped to support over 4.5 million jobs across the United States. Our report highlights how our industry is unlocking critical capital that is deployed over the long-term.”

AIC is a private equity advocacy and resource organization. It used data from PitchBook to compile the report. PitchBook gathers deal information from public sources, surveys and primary research. For transactions without publicly disclosed investment values, PitchBook uses an algorithm to deduce the investment values and includes those deals in its state figures.
