Veteran statistics

Veterans in the Workplace

  • There are 413,723 veterans living in Wisconsin, roughly 7.2 percent of the state population. Of them, more than 300,000 served during wartime.
  • Roughly one out of every four employed veterans works for the government.
  • Veterans are more than twice as likely as non-veterans to work in the public sector.
  • Around 65 percent of all veterans work in the private sector.
  • Of all veterans who work in the private sector, 36 percent work in management or professional positions. For female veterans, the percentage is significantly higher – 49.5 percent — and for men, it’s slightly lower – 35 percent.
  • Veterans are both more likely to be employed and more likely to earn a salary at or above 400 percent of the poverty line than non-veterans.
  • There is no statistical difference between the proportion of male veterans who become self-employed after ending their military careers and their non-veteran counterparts (both cohorts account for about 11.5 percent of their respective populations). Female veterans, however, are less likely than female nonveterans to become self-employed. Only 4.5 percent are self-employed, compared to 7.4 percent of female nonveterans.
