Cue Cube moves from West Allis to Plymouth

New owner looks to expand distribution

Scott Thomson had long wanted to own a business of his own, but had put it off while building a career in various sales roles for home improvement manufacturing companies.

He finally decided it was “now or never” and set out to find an opportunity.Cue Cube-Plymouth-020216-contributed

He folded his passion for pool and billiards into the search and eventually landed on Milwaukee-based Cue Cube as a possibility. The company makes an accessory that looks similar to the chalk used on cue tips, but it is actually intended for shaping the tip or roughing it up.

“I sent them a letter out of the blue, as I did with a few other companies,” Thomson said.

He was able to secure a meeting in June 2015 with owner Marge Marten. Marten, formerly Marge Finney, had founded the company with her late husband Bill in 1982.

After attending trade shows and meeting with vendors, Thomson said he felt like the industry was in a good position. An agreement was in place by November and the deal closed in December.

Thomson has since relocated the company from its West Allis location to Plymouth where he lives. He said he is going to be “rekindling some of the lost relationships” with prior customers and will begin hiring in the coming weeks.

He plans on expanding the distribution of current products, broadening the product line and developing other accessories “to meet the needs of both the amateur and professional pool player.”
