Doyle warns of future regrets on train

Gov. Jim Doyle says Governor-elect Scott Walker’s insistence on killing a high-speed rail line will leave future Wisconsinites wondering what happened.
At Walker’s request, Doyle recently paused work on the proposed line between Milwaukee to Madison as part of a federal plan to build a corridor eventually linking Chicago to the Twin Cities. Federal officials are now saying the line could bypass Wisconsin through the Quad-Cities in Illinois and Iowa if rejected here, and the $810 million in federal stimulus funds earmarked for the line could be sent to other states, instead of Wisconsin.
“Twenty years from now, people will be saying, ‘Why doesn’t that train go through Wisconsin?'” lamented Doyle during a talk this week with Milwaukee TV host Mike Gousha at Marquette University’s "On the Issues" series.
“With all due respect, there is a big difference between making a political statement and making a choice,” Doyle said.
