Rock the Green, a near-zero waste outdoor music festival held in Milwaukee, has been recognized on a global level with the “A Greener Festival Award.”
Presented by A Greener Festival, a nonprofit organization devoted to green practices at music and arts events, the award highlighted Rock the Green’s sustainability initiatives at its first two concerts.
Rock the Green hosted its second annual concert this past September at which it produced 640 pounds of trash, equivalent to 13 standard trash cans. Festival organizers and attendees cut down on waste by using waste reclamation stations, food grinding stations, electronic tickets and bicycle pedal power among other sustainable methods,
Headliners at the 2012 festival included Imagine Dragons, Third Eye Blind, and Switchfoot.
Rock the Green was one of 40 international award winners honored by A Greener Festival.
“While many music festivals implement environmentally-friendly practices, Rock the Green raises the bar with a holistic approach to sustainable event production to green the event from the ground up,” said Lindsay Stevens Gardner, founder and executive director of the nonprofit. “We are thrilled to receive global recognition for these efforts, with hopes that our model can be reproduced elsewhere to inspire communities outside our own.”
Rock the Green board member Brooks Stevens accepted the award at a ceremony in London on Dec. 3.
