Milwaukee’s General Mitchell International Airport plans to begin a $41.28 million renovation project of its baggage claim area later this year.
“It is a complete renovation,” said airport spokeswoman Pat Rowe. “The baggage claim area was last renovated 25 to 30 years ago. The bag belt systems are worn out. The building is in need of a complete overhaul.”
M.A. Mortenson Co. will be the construction manager for the project, Rowe said. The project will begin later this year and will be completed in phases because part of the baggage claim area needs to remain functional during the project. The entire project is expected to take about a year to complete, Rowe said.
The project is just one of several, totaling about $60 million, planned at the airport. The other projects include: $8.48 million for improvements to the main electrical supply system, $4.34 million to build new in-line baggage screening facilities, $2.77 million for a new training facility, $2.03 million to provide radio narrow banding (which will replace the airport’s old radio system) and $1.1 million for repairs to the parking structure.
All capital projects at the airport are paid for by fees paid by the airlines that use the airport, Rowe said.
The County Board’s Finance, Personnel and Audit Committee on Thursday will review a request for the county to issue $60 million in general airport revenue bonds for the projects.
