Local nonprofit vies for votes in Social Media Makeover contest

IndependenceFirst, a Milwaukee-based nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering individuals with disabilities through education, advocacy, independent living services and coalition building, is part of a CommuniCause contest that could win the organization a $25,000 Social Media Makeover.

The organization is primarily directed by, and for the benefit of, persons with disabilities.

"It is clear that businesses and nonprofit organizations need to be more interactive with the people they serve, their benefactors, volunteers, employees and community members at large in a Web 2.0 world," Carol Voss, public relations and marketing director said. "For nonprofits, it is more difficult to be using social media platforms due to time and funding constraints, lack of knowledge for implementation and lean staffing for such things. This CommuniCause Social Media Makeover contest is a great way to get IndependenceFirst to the next level of responsiveness and interactions with people with disabilities, our donors and volunteers – and in the meantime, it is creating opportunities for IndependenceFirst to become noticed on a national scale."

According to Voss, IndependenceFirst has more than 600 Twitter followers, (@independence1st), and winning this contest would enable the organization to generate more awareness of the potential of people with disabilities to contribute to society, increase exposure for our services and help gain additional volunteers and donors.

The contest will end on Friday, July 31. To cast your vote for Milwaukee’s IndependenceFirst, click here.
