Monkey Joe’s
Wisconsin Amusement Concepts, LLC, Milwaukee, held a ground breaking ceremony Nov. 15, for Wisconsin’s first Monkey Joe’s indoor play center in Waukesha. Monkey Joe’s is an Atlanta based franchise with 30 other locations throughout the country and serves as an indoor play and entertainment center for families with children ages 2 through 12. The 18,000-square-foot building is at 2040 West Bluemound Road off the corner of Bluemound Road and Springdale Road in Waukesha. The project should be completed in March 2008.
Aur Computer Service
The key club of Wauwatosa West High School teamed with Aur Computer Service to collect blue jeans and donate them to the St. Vincent de Paul Society on behalf of the Sojourner Truth House. Over 600 pairs of jeans were collected during October to raise awareness during national domestic violence awareness month. As a result of their efforts the Key Club was awarded a refurbished computer from Aur Computer Service. The Key Club is a group of students who volunteer their time to better their community. The Sojourner Truth House’s mission is to provide shelter, safety, support, education and advocacy to break the cycle of domestic violence.
Dr. James Sebastian
Dr. James Sebastian, a professor of medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin, received the Association of American Medical College’s (AAMC) Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Robert J. Glaser Distinguished Teacher Award on Nov. 3. The award was established by the AOA medical honor society in 1988 to provide national recognition to faculty members who have distinguished themselves in medical student education. The award is named for long-time AOA executive secretary Robert J. Glaser, M.D. Sebastian is the only Medical College faculty member to have received every department-specific and college-wide teaching award. Over the past two decades, he has received 12 teaching awards from the department of medicine; seven college-wide teaching awards; three college-wide educational awards; and six distinguished-service citizen awards, including Best Teacher Award (given by the College’s medicine house staff) and the Standing Ovation Award, honoring faculty who have enhanced Medical College students’ quality of campus life. Sebastian holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Notre Dame, and a master’s degree from Indiana University School of Medicine. He completed his residency at the Medical College, where he also served as chief resident.
Nurse wins Fellowship award
Registered nurse Sue Ela has been chosen for a Fellowship in the American Academy of Nursing (FAAN). Fellows are highly accomplished nursing leaders in education, management, practice and research who have been recognized for their extraordinary nursing careers. Ela is senior vice president for Aurora Health Care, and president of its metro region. Ela has more than 30 years of nursing and health care leadership experience. In her current role at Aurora, she is responsible for hospitals, clinics and facilities in Milwaukee County, including Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center, Aurora Sinai Medical Center, West Allis Memorial Hospital, St. Luke’s South Shore and Aurora Psychiatric Hospital. Ela provides clinical leadership for Care Management and Quality, Clinical Research and Patient Safety. Among her accomplishments are playing a key role in establishing the Wisconsin Center for Nursing and the Aurora VNA Zilber Family Hospice. In 2007, she received the Peak Performer award from the Wisconsin Business Hall of Fame. In 2006, she received the Sacagawea Award from Professional Dimensions for her career accomplishments, community commitment and support for the advancement of women.
She serves on the Aurora Health Care Management Committee as well as a variety of community boards and organizations including the Greater Milwaukee Committee, Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee, and the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Milwaukee. Ela co-chaired the United Way of Greater Milwaukee Community Campaign in 2003, exceeding the fund raising goal of $35 million. The Academy creates initiatives that drive reform of America’s health care system. It is governed by a 10-member board of directors who are elected by the elite group of 1,500 Fellows.
