Whole Foods announces plans for Wauwatosa store

Whole Foods has made it official: the Austin, Texas-based retailer of natural and organic foods will open a store at The Mayfair Collection development in Wauwatosa.

BizTimes Milwaukee first reported in September that Whole Foods planned to open a store at The Mayfair Collection project, a mixed-use development in the Burleigh Triangle, located northeast of U.S. Highway 45 and Burleigh Street, that is being developed by Chicago-based HSA Commercial Real Estate.

It will be the second Whole Foods store in the Milwaukee area. The only existing Whole Foods store in the region is located on the East Side of the City of Milwaukee.

“We are very excited that Whole Foods chose The Mayfair Collection for its second store in the metro Milwaukee area,” said Tim Blum, executive vice president and managing director of HSA’s retail brokerage division. “We are hopeful that this will help fuel the continued development of the Burleigh Triangle into the premier commercial and residential district in the region.”

Whole Foods on Wednesday announced plans to open a Wauwatosa store, and today HSA announced that Whole Foods has signed a lease for a 45,150-square-foot store in the second phase of The Mayfair Collection project.

“Wauwatosa is not only a dynamic and energetic community, but also one with a strong passion for natural and organic foods,” said Michael Bashaw, Midwest regional president of Whole Foods Market. “We are delighted to join this community and support the wonderful people who live in it.”

The Whole Foods store at The Mayfair Collection will be housed in a converted warehouse space at the northeast corner of Burleigh Street and 112th Street.

Plans for the second phase of The Mayfair Collection also include approximately 50,000 square feet of additional retail space, a mix of upscale bars and restaurants, a bank branch, and a 140-room hotel.

HSA Commercial expects to break ground on the second phase of the project this spring with a planned opening for Whole Foods early in 2016.

The first phase of The Mayfair Collection project consisted of redevelopment of warehouse buildings along Highway 45 into retail space. Tenants in the first phase, which will be complete in early April, will include Nordstrom Rack, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Saks Fifth Avenue Off 5th, Old Navy and Ulta Beauty.

Proposed future phases of The Mayfair Collection include the development of multi-family housing, office space and medical buildings.
