The 2013 Wisconsin State Fair welcomed its first round of fairgoers this morning, including Gov. Scott Walker and Mayor Tom Barrett, who joined Fair Park Board Chairman John Yingling and Fair Park Chief Executive Officer Rick Frenette at the fair’s opening ceremonies.

The state fair, presented by U.S. Cellular, runs from today through Sunday, Aug. 11, at Wisconsin State Fair Park, 640 S. 84th St. in West Allis, with live music performances, agriculture presentations and judging, fried food, rides and more.

Highlights of opening day include a 1 p.m. Rabbit Showmanship presentation at the Small Animal Palace, 6 p.m. Clydesdale Draft Horses-Hitch Classes in the Case IH Coliseum, shows performed by Kenya Safari Acrobats at 4:30 p.m. and 6 p.m., and live music performed by Sam Llanas (a former member of the BoDeans) at 8 p.m.

Food highlights include a bacon brat on-a-stick, beer donuts, Cajun Mac & Cheese, deep fried taco cheesecake, and frosted flakes chicken on-a-stick – all of which are debuting as new food options at this year’s fair.

Other new fair features include a garden walk, a duck race, an exhibit of white tigers and another exhibit of trained baboons.

Today’s fair patrons can gain $2 admission before 4 p.m. by donating two nonperishable food items toward the Hunger Task Force or by making cash contributions.
