Basking Ridge, N.J.-based Verizon Wireless recently announced that it has completed a capacity improvement project for its 3G network in Wisconsin that it says increases the data capacity of the network by 40 percent across the state.
The project entailed adding 3G capacity on 350 percent more cell sites in the state in 2010, compared with 2009.
Verizon Wireless says the project will ensure it to stay ahead of its Wisconsin customers growing data usage on their smart phones, wireless modems and handsets.
โWith so many of our customers relying on their devices for much more than just making phone calls, itโs imperative that we stay ahead of their usage habits,โ says T.J. Fox, president, Wisconsin/Illinois region, Verizon Wireless. โIt doesnโt matter how many bells and whistles your smart phone offers if you cannot depend on it to keep you connected wherever you go. Verizon Wireless is committed to making sure our network has enough capacity to handle the increasing data traffic from our customersโ Internet browsing, tweeting and mobile gaming.โ
Verizon Wireless, a joint venture of New York-based Verizon Communications Inc. and Newbury, U.K.-based Vodafone Group Plc, says its ongoing network investment in Wisconsin now totals more than $354.5 million. Nationally, Verizon Wireless says it has invested more than $60 billion since it was formed, or about $5.7 billion per year, to increase the coverage and capacity of its network, and to add new services.
