Veit gets demolition contract for Northwestern Mutual building

Organizations:

Rogers, Minn.-based specialty contracting and waste management firm Veit, which has a Milwaukee-area office in New Berlin, will be the project manager for the deconstruction of Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Co.’s east office building at its downtown Milwaukee corporate headquarters campus.

The building will be demolished to make way for the $450 million, 32-story, 1.1-million-square-foot office tower that Northwestern Mutual plans to build.

The 16-story, 452,000-square-foot office building that will be demolished was built in 1978.

The multi-layered, floor-by-floor deconstruction project will begin in December and is expected to be complete in the fall of 2014. Veit will partner with Milwaukee-area contractors to perform a variety of functions on the project.

“We’re excited to execute this important phase of our project and we welcome Veit to help us move forward as we prepare to build the Northwestern Mutual Tower and Commons,” said Scott Wollenzein, Northwestern Mutual facility operations consultant. “We also look forward to providing hundreds of local jobs over the year-long deconstruction process.”

Crews have already begun preparation work that includes the installation of construction fencing and scaffolding, initial foundation work and the removal of bushes and trees.

Several trees will be transported to and replanted on Northwestern Mutual’s Franklin campus, the company said.
