This summer, The Faye McBeath Foundation spearheaded a community collaboration to promote reading and literacy for low-income youth in the Milwaukee area.
The foundation raised funds to provide free books for thousands of Milwaukee-area youth, and then partnered with local organizations to get the books in the children’s hands.
The partner organizations included Hunger Task Force, Milwaukee Public Library, NewThreads, Penworthy, Kohl’s Neighborhood House, Sharp Literacy, United Way of Greater Milwaukee, Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee, Milwaukee Public Schools and the Salvation Army, among others. They delivered the books at meal sites and throughout high poverty and low resource neighborhoods in Milwaukee.
The effort was designed to provide children with interesting and age-appropriate books, and also to help families select reading materials for their children.
The goal was to promote literacy and also prevent the summer slide many children experience due to the loss of knowledge and skills learned during the school year.
