Sheets receives national award for child abuse prevention

Lynn K. Sheets, MD, medical director of the Child Protection Center at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, and associate professor of Pediatrics at the Medical College of Wisconsin, was selected by committees from the National Alliance of Children’s Trust and Prevention Funds and the American Academy of Pediatrics as the 2013 recipient of the Ray E. Helfer, MD Award.

The award is given to a pediatrician who has made significant contributions to preventing child abuse before it occurs, primarily through his or her work with a state children’s trust or prevention fund.

Dr. Sheets is a board-certified child abuse pediatrician who has committed her professional career to advancing child maltreatment prevention efforts in Wisconsin and Kansas. Her many leadership roles span across prevention, treatment, research, advocacy and education. Her most recently published research on sentinel injuries has profound implications for preventing child physical abuse, including abusive head trauma.

“Dr. Sheets is dedicated to meaningful collaboration with Children Trust Fund in advancing a prevention agenda in Wisconsin, offering an unwavering commitment, outstanding expertise, contribution to prevention research on sentinel injuries and more than 20 years of experience in evaluating abused children,” said Jennifer Jones, executive director, Wisconsin Children Trust Fund, a statewide organization supporting services to prevent child abuse and neglect.

The late Ray Helfer, MD, is considered the “father” of children’s trust and prevention funds due to his concept that special funds could be used to ensure that our nation’s children grow up nurtured, safe and free from harm. Dr. Helfer’s lifelong dedication to children serves as a model for all citizens.

This award was established in honor of the late Ray Helfer, MD, sonsidered the “father” of children’s trust and prevention funds, and was presented at the National Alliance of Children’s Trust and Prevention Funds annual meeting in Seattle, Nov. 19-20.
