What does your daily or weekly fitness regime consist of? My weekly routine consists of basketball 1-2 times per week, play racquetball, weightlift, run, walk, and bike. My seasonal routine consists of golf, swim and downhill skiing.

What fitness clubs do you belong to, if any? Westwood Health and Fitness

Other than the obvious health benefits, how has being fit improved your life? I like to enjoy a variety of activites. With four daughters, I want to share in active time with them, especially outdoor activites. When I compete, I want to compete with the guys 10 and 15 years yonger than I am. Fitness and sporting activities give me a competitive outlet. I feel physically and mentally better with more energy and balance.

How does personal fitness affect your work life? I feel sharper with greater energy. Knowing that I am taking care of myself helps me be a better leader to the organization, I believe.

How does fitness or wellness affect your overall organization? We have had a number of employees quit smoking. Our insurance plan utilization improves with wellness and education. A number of employees have experienced sustainable weight loss. We have had some fun with it.

What advice do you have for other executives interested in starting either a personal fitness plan or corporate wellness initiative? I have always been a proponent of leadership through example. Start the initiative from the top. Also, do not look for an immediate ROI. The return will come 12 to 24 months down the line through improved plan utilization and employee morale.
