New startup offers easy do-it-yourself car maintenance videos

Milwaukee-based start-up company CarCareKiosk has announced the launch of its new website The company offers users the ability to search their cars make, model and year to find free do-it-yourself car maintenance and repair videos. “Our goal is to empower drivers to understand their cars just a little bit better, ” said Hans Angermeier, founder and CEO of the company. “If people can do simple repairs themselves or do monthly checkups before a major problem emerges there’s the potential to save a lot of money. We just want to give drivers the ability to do that.” CarCareKiosk currently has over 8,000 videos in its library covering more than 60 different car repairs for most of the cars on the road today. According to Angermeier, he got the idea for the company approximately seven years ago when he tried to change a headlight on his truck. “It was frustrating, and I broke a few things,” he said. “I remember thinking it would have been a lot easier if I could have just watched someone do it first.” Angermeier finished college in Indiana and then worked in finance in New York, N.Y., but the idea for the company was always in the back of his mind. He returned home to Milwaukee about two years ago and started shooting cars for the videos. “We have some relationships with car dealerships and garages in the area,” he said. “Our video archives go all the way back to 1990.” New car sales have dropped and the average age of most cars on the road is 10.8 years, Angermeier said. “In general, people are waiting to buy new cars until they have to,” he said. “That’s why our archive goes as back as far as it does. Older cars need more maintenance and repair and we want to be able to assist people with that.” Users can log on to the website and type the make, model and year of their car to search for videos on changing the oil, changing a headlight, an air filter, checking the fluid levels or even changing wiper blades, he said. “We have a lot of videos and we’re updating our library daily,” he said. “If we don’t have your specific make and model though, our complex algorithm will be able to retrieve a video that should work for you, using a car with a similar engine size, parts and structure.” CarCareKiosk has formed a partnership with UW-Milwaukee’s Peck School of the Arts and plans to hire 16 interns from the school this summer to help with video production, editing, upload and website content, he said. This is the second year the company has helped give students necessary work experience, he said.
