Milwaukee-based WiRED Ventures plans to build a four-story, six-unit condominium building at 1528-32 N. Jackson St., just north of downtown Milwaukee. Construction is expected to begin in March.
The building will have 3 one-bedroom units, 2 two-bedroom units and 1 three-bedroom plus loft unit.
The new building will replace a duplex that will be demolished and a vacant lot. The building’s striking modern design will set it apart from the 100-plus-year-old homes on the street.
"As Milwaukee’s condominium market is increasingly marked by large-scale developments converging with style and amenity, we believe there is a dynamic market for smaller scale, warm, modern design in classic downtown neighborhoods, such as the east side," WiRED Ventures said in its proposal to the city. "We believe this development will set the bar for boutique Milwaukee modernism. We selected this location chiefly for its tree-lined natural street beauty, neighborhood character and dynamic connectivity to East Pointe, the restaurants and entertainment on Water Street, the emerging Park East corridor and historic Brady Street."
WiRED is collaborating on the project with Studio Dwell Architects, a Chicago-based award-winning architectural firm, which designed the modern-looking building. WiRED Ventures, founded by former Mandel Group Inc. executive Blair Williams, is planning to do a series of developments in collaboration with Studio Dwell in Milwaukee.
"We’re getting close with the sellers of a couple of sites (to do more projects with Studio Dwell)," Williams said. "We plan to do a variety of projects from single family homes to 16-unit types of deals."
The projects with Studio Dwell, like the Jackson Street project, will all feature high-quality building materials with modern architectural design, Williams said. The projects will be infill developments similar to others done by Studio Dwell in hot Chicago neighborhoods such as Lincoln Park, Wicker Park and Bucktown, he said. The sites for the projects will be traditional residential streets located within walking distance of urban amenities such as shops, restaurants and bars, Williams said.
